Gunpowder recipe i picked after moving to hyderabad. This is a local flavour and used very regularly with idly, dosa etc.

  • red chili - 5 to 6
  • black powder - 1/2 tsp
  • chana dal - 1/3 cup 
  • urad dal - 1/3 cup 
  • coconut powder 1/3 cup
  • sesame seeds (till) - 1/3 cup
  • rice - 1/3 cup 
  • curry leaves - 6 -7
  • jaggery - 1/2 tbsp
  • tamarind - 1 tbsp
  • salt - as per taste 

  • First dry roast the sesame seeds in frying pan (kadai) when its turns brown in color. keep aside .
  • Then roast red chili and black pepper.  Keep aside.
  • Then roast coconut powder.
  • Now roast urad dal , channa dal, rice with little oil (refined oil) (1/2 tsp) till all of it turns golden brown color.
  • Now roast curry leaves.
  • Mix all the ingredients let it cool down completely.

  • Now we want to grind all the ingredients. Take the food processor grinding jar and put all roasted spices with jaggery, tamarind. Grind it to coarse powder. Don't overgrind else it will become too thin. Please refer picture.

  • Take it out in a bowl and add salt as per taste. Mix it well. 
  • Gunpowder is ready. Serve it with idly, dosa etc.
  • Store this in an airtight container. It is safely reusable for at least a weak.
Note : The jar you are using for storage should be completely dry and should be stored in a non-damp place.
